Title:  Requests for Permission of Divorced Persons to Remarry

Date Approved by Diocesan Council:  March 14, 2003

In order to comply with Title 1, Canon 19, of the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church permitting divorced persons to be remarried in the Episcopal Church, the Bishop has established the following policy:

  1. Applicants must obtain the permission of the Episcopal bishop in whose diocese they reside.  This applies to non-Episcopalians as well a those who are members of the Church.
  2. A period of one year minimum must have elapsed since a Final Divorce Decree has been issued before the bishop will consider approval of remarriage in the Church.  Exceptions to this policy will only be considered for unusual circumstances.
  3. A copy of the signature page of the final divorce decree must be returned with the answers to the questions in the application.
  4. Allow at least thirty days for processing of requests for permission to remarry.
  5. The attached form is to be used for applications to remarry (contact the Diocesan Office for form or click here)
