Dakota Experience

(Some of this may change for 2008)

It usually a full house at a session of Dakota Experience at Calvary Cathedral in Sioux Falls. New clergy, members of Ministry Teams, those seeking ordination, and many other interested people devote a long weekend to learning about another culture, and about themselves.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Brokenleg combines anthropology, sociology, psychology, and a few other studies in an intense and fascinating weekend that explores Native American (and specifically L/Dakota) culture, history, spirituality, tradition, and the impact of white imperialism, church mission work, and the reservation system on them. Fr. Brokenleg seems an endless source of information, and he imparts it in an organized, succinct, and humorous manner that makes the weekend speed by.

The next regular session is scheduled for

November 2-4, 2007

at Calvary Cathedral in Sioux Falls

Facilitated by Dr. Martin Brokenleg

It is a required session for all clergy new to the diocese, for those in the ordination process, and for elected or appointed leaders of diocesan committees, commissions, agencies, or boards.

It is recommended for anyone (white or Native) interested in learning/ sharing about the Dakota way of life. Native Americans comprise over half the Episcopalians in the Diocese of South Dakota, and ministry improves when we can meet, know, and understand each other.

Costs: Your travel, lodging in the area, and $50 to help cover meals during the conference and materials. For those required to attend, the Diocese will arrange lodging and cover meals during the conference.

If you would like more information, please contact the Diocesan Office at 605-338-9751. Registration information will be out by September.
